Some Thoughts on... Spirituality
|
It’s said that in “every cloud there is a silver lining”. And if there is one thing that an economic breakdown can bring, it is
a return to the basics. One of the basic things that we are missing in today’s world for many people is an active focus on
our spiritual life. Money makes a fickle often soul sucking God, (though clearly poverty isn’t some direct path to divinity
if you ask me)
I am privileged in my work to be able to speak regularly about divinity. Most people do not have that privilege. I have read
for people from all of the world’s major religions (and probably some of the lesser ones as well). More and more
however, I am reading for what I have termed people who are “spiritual eclectics”.
In my readings I will often ask if my client is a spiritual person. This is certainly not a prerequisite for getting a reading
from me, I will read for you no matter where you stand spiritually. Yet if they are open to finding or renewing a spiritual
connection, it is often the missing component to them making progress on an issue. Many rush to deny it, but when I
clarify that I am not asking if they are religious, they will admit that they are indeed a spiritual being. They do believe in
“something outside of themselves or bigger than themselves”. Personally, I no longer associate myself with a particular
religion, though I tell people I was raised a “liberal Lutheran” and that my family are practicing Lutherans still, and I really
love worshipping with my family. Truthfully I enjoy worshipping divinity in every way I have ever done so - with anyone
whose heart is open.
The biggest disadvantage to being spiritually “eclectic”, is that you miss the spiritual fellowship of the church, or the
mosque or the synagogue or what have you. Organization is both the downfall and the benefit of religion. Today’s society
is very scattered. To be global adds a lot of pressure on schedules let’s face it. It is a wonderful/terrible thing to be so in
touch with the “news” of our neighbors; be it global or national or
even just in our own town. It puts tremendous demands on our time. The funny thing about divinity, it seldom pressures
us to spend time with it. This is why it is so hard I think to develop spiritual discipline. And make no mistake about it,
that is one very important component of a rich spiritual life.
Why have a spiritual life at all? If you are an emotional person I would tell you because it can be a marvelous tool for
emotional balance and grounding. If you are more the intellectual type I would say to you that nothing calms the mind and
brings clarity of thought like our spiritual practices can.
Many of the parents who come to me are aware that their children are highly intuitive. There are books written about the
“crystal” children, or the “indigo” children. I agree that the children born in the last 30 or so years stay more psychically
open than those of past generations, I don’t feel that we are getting the best of that energy due partly to the fact that they
in large numbers are not getting a spiritual base (there is also a lack of balance with overabundance of technology in their
lives, but that‘s another column).
More than ever before, parents are raising their children with no regular spiritual expression in or through the home and
family. Most have done this because they don’t care for the religious leanings they were raised with. What they don’t
realize is that this is leaving them with a void in a crucial area of their development. I tell them at least give them
something to reject! More even than in the past, these young people who are so sensitive & intuitive, need the grounding
of the spiritual base.
Humanity has now more potential than ever before to leap ahead or to self-destruct thanks to our technological advances.
With great power comes great responsibility. How can we send them into the future armed only with the power of
technology? Where will they learn their humanity if not from the sacred?
This issue has many components, and I feel it is key to growing our families, and therefore our societies in a positive
direction. Due to it’s complexities, I will be writing another article or two as a continuation of this topic. Please feel free
in the meantime, to email me at readingsbytammymn@yahoo.com with any questions, or comments regarding this or
related topics.
